Scholarship Guidelines :

1. Citizenship. Australians in Film Heather Ledger Scholarship is confined to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia.

2. Age. Awards are granted to applicants over the age of 18 years.

3. Interviews. Applicants must be available to attend an interview in Australia in person if required.

4. Amount of Award. The amount of money attached to the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship is between USD$1 and USD$10,000.

5. Support from Other Sources. The selection committee will take account of any other existing sources of support for particular applicants and will normally avoid duplicating the activities of other scholarship bodies.

6. Contract. The award of an Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship is subject to the scholar agreeing to be bound by the conditions laid down in a contract signed between Australians in Film and the scholar. A scholarship cannot commence until the Board receives an executed copy of the contract from the scholar.

7. Scholarship Travel. The Scholarship will pay or provide for all approved scholarship travel. All major travel will be by economy class air. Travel will begin and terminate at the major airport nearest to the scholar’s home address. The route and/or sequence of places to be visited may be varied to reduce costs.

8. Supplementary Travel. Surface travel may be authorized to supplement and or complement air travel.

9. Travel Allowance. If it is not possible to pre- purchase or acquire tickets to cover all travel, a travel allowance will be paid in advance to allow the scholar to purchase the necessary tickets.

10. Overseas Living Allowance. A variable allowance to assist in a scholar’s living expenses while in USA will be paid to scholar, as part of the project budget applied for.

11. Visas. Successful applicant is responsible for obtaining and paying for any relevant visas in order to fulfill travel requirements to the USA.

12. Deductions. The allowances paid to a scholar may be abated by the amount received under an award from another source during the term of the scholarship. All sources should be disclosed in application.

13. Savings. Unexpended amounts of an allowance granted for one purpose are not transferable to another purpose.

14. Payment. Allowances will be paid after approval of the final program or 1-2 weeks before the scholar’s departure date, whichever is the later.

15. US Income Tax. The scholar, not the Board, is solely responsible for US Federal, state and local income tax on amounts paid under the scholarship and the scholar should consult the scholar’s own tax advisor regarding such taxes.

16. GST Liability. There may be Australian GST implications for scholarship funds. Any GST liability will be borne by the successful applicant unless otherwise advised or approved. It is the successful applicant’s sole responsibility to ascertain if there is GST implications and to advise the Board accordingly.

17. Application Form. The purpose of the Application Form is to enable the Board and selection committee to assess the applicant and the outline of the activities proposed in order to draw up short lists for interview. All applications must be made on the Application Form provided.

18. References. An applicant is required to obtain two references from different individuals. Applicants should include at least one reference from a recognized authority or entity involved in the arts or entertainment industries. The referee
reports should be returned to the applicant for submission with their application. Applications submitted without the two supporting references will not be accepted.

19. Selection. Selection of the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship is completed annually using the following timetable:
(a) Application Start Date. Applications are called from 5th October 2009.
(b) Submission of Applications. Applications with supporting references and required documentation must be submitted online or by email by 5pm November 30th 2009 (PST Australia).
(c) Closing Date. Applications close at 5pm (PST - Aus) on November 30th 2009. Applications lodged or received after that date will not be considered. Where required, supporting documents may be emailed to hls@australiansinfilm.org. Faxed or mailed applications will not be accepted. Supporting documents may be mailed if approved by Australians in Film.
(d) Selection. The selection of the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship and the procedure undertaken are at the absolute discretion of the Board and the selection committee.
(e) Successful Applicants. Successful applicant will be advised after final selection has been decided which will be in February 2010.
(f) Reserve Applicants. reserve applicant may be selected but will only be advised if a selected Applicant is unable to take up a scholarship.
(g) Unsuccessful Applicants. Applicant may be advised as unsuccessful at any stage of the selection process.

20. Materials. All materials forwarded by applicants for the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship become the property of Australians In Film.

21. Reapplying. The awarding of the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship is a competitive process with the merit of the proposal being the primary test. Unsuccessful applicants may and are encouraged to reapply in subsequent years.

22. Privacy Statement. Your privacy is respected by the Board and personal information will be handled in a sensitive manner. Information collected on the Application and Referee Report Forms will be used for the purpose of selecting the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship winner and will be provided only to Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship Staff, Selection Panel and Committee Members, the Board, and Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship benefactors.

23. Media Release And Other Publicity. The successful applicant’s name and the subject of the scholarship will be provided to the media as part of a media release at the time the annual Australians in Film Heather Ledger Scholarship is announced. These details may be used to promote the scholarship with the media. An applicant’s name and scholarship may also be published on the Australians in Film website and in its newsletter.

24. Press Conference. Successful applicant may be required to attend a press conference to announce the recipient. If so, airfare and accommodation (if required) will be absorbed by Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship.

25. Ineligible Applications. If you do not provide all the information requested on the Application Form the Board will be unable to process your application.

26. No Amendments. Once submitted, no amendments may be made to your application.
